W. George Allen Chapter History

The W. George Allen Chapter is named after the first African-American graduate from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Most cannot imagine the hardship he faced when he attended school in the 1960s. True equality, however, was not achieved when Mr. Allen graduated. In the decades after his graduation, UF Law continued to have truly paltry numbers for minority enrollment. Although the school stressed a commitment to diversity, it did not manifest in the student body population. I have personally met and spoken with Black UF Law alumni from the 1980s and 1990s and they experienced hostility reminiscent of W. George Allen’s experience.

Since we benefit from the legacy of those who came before us, connecting with our alumni is crucial. We want to understand the sacrifices they made in order to appreciate and gain inspiration from their actions. This understanding enables us to continue the fight for social justice. Meeting our alumni has been educational, enlightening, and enriching.

The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at UF Law is a group of students committed to strengthening the bonds of friendship and community while fostering an environment for students of color to excel academically and professionally.

Black Law Student Association History

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) is a national organization formed to articulate and promote the needs and goals of black law students and effectuate change in the legal community.

The largest student-run organization in the United States with nearly 6,000 members.

The W. George Allen Chapter BLSA serves the community of black law students at the University of Florida.

A beacon for awareness of the needs of the Black community and law students.

The mission of NBLSA is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
